Berry Crop Considerations
Berries command premium prices, especially organic and locally grown. However, they require intensive management, are pest-prone, and need significant labor for harvest. Evaluate market demand and labor availability before establishing berry plantings.
Strawberry Production
Matted row systems allow runner plants to fill beds naturally. Space mother plants 18-24 inches apart, allow some runners to root, then remove excess plants. Renovate beds after harvest by mowing, narrowing rows, and fertilizing.
Plasticulture uses raised beds with plastic mulch and drip irrigation. Higher initial investment but produces cleaner fruit, reduces disease, and simplifies weed management. Replace plants annually or biennially.
Raspberry and Blackberry
Separate summer-bearing and fall-bearing varieties simplify management. Fall-bearing types produce on current season's canes - mow all canes after harvest for easy disease management.
Trellising supports canes, improves air circulation, and facilitates harvest. Install posts and wire before plants grow large. Regular pruning removes old canes and thins new ones for optimal fruit production.
Blueberry Production
Acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5) is essential for blueberries. Test soil before planting and acidify with sulfur if necessary. Maintain acidity with acidic mulches (pine needles, peat, sawdust) and fertilizers (sulfur-coated urea).
Multiple varieties extend harvest season and ensure pollination. Early, mid, and late-season varieties provide 6-8 weeks of harvest from a single planting. Cross-pollination increases fruit size and yield.
Organic Pest Management
Bird netting protects ripening fruit from bird damage. Install supports to keep netting off plants, allowing full net draping to ground level. Secure edges to prevent birds from entering underneath.
Spotted wing drosophila is a major organic berry pest. Sanitation (removing overripe and damaged fruit), monitoring with traps, and organic sprays (spinosad, pyrethrins) provide partial control. Harvest frequently and cool berries immediately.
